CAS-IT awarded RO 85000
As a result of the very welcome and encouraging support from TRC, CAS-Sohar-IT have already submitted a proposal related to Pattern recognition/Security, and yet another proposal which links Arabic text recognition to Such a system will provide Omani academics, researchers and businesses with a high power but low cost means to solve diverse compute-intensive problems.
The facility will enable grid applications to harness the power of volunteer computers and video games consoles from around the country via the Internet, and to make maximal use of their resources when they are idle. Support will be given to grid applications that seek to reduce computation time by exploiting the idle Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) in addition to their own CPU.
Dr Magid Nikraz from the Colleges of Applied Sciences - Sohar IT faculty (CAS-Sohar-IT) was recently awarded RO85,000 for the research, development and implementation of a comprehensive grid computing facility for Oman. Dr Magid heads a team which includes expertise from SQU, Monash University/Malaysia and Murdoch University/Australia as well as other academics from CAS-Sohar and CAS-Ibri.
This is the first of a number of Colleges of Applied Sciences proposals aimed at increasing the level of applied research and development in the Sultanate.
